How Much Does an Author Website Cost in 2025?

Every serious author who’s looking to build a career has asked this question. And the answers haven’t gotten easier to understand.

Some claim you can build it for free, while others say you should pay them $15 000 to build it for you.

It makes you wonder if it’s even worth getting a website.

But make no mistake, if you want to invest in yourself as an author, this step is one you’ll have to take if you want to:

  • Establish your brand,
  • Build a community of readers, and
  • Boost book sales.

Whether you’re a debut author or ready to level up your career, we’ve got all the information you need to make a decision that fits your goals.

Are Author Websites Worth It?

Imagine you’re networking and someone asks to read a sample of your work. Where do you send them?

Or what if social media platforms keep burying your announcements? How will your readers easily see your updates?

The answer to both is an author website.

If you’re seeking long-term career growth and to be taken seriously as a writer, you need a website.

Without one, you’ll look like an amateur flying by the seat of your pants, crossing your fingers that it all works out. But there’s more to a website than that.

Here’s why Author websites are worth it:

  • Marketing tool: It’s the home of your marketing, with blogs, announcements, trailers, and customizable landing pages.
  • Your hub: Display all your book series, events, podcasts, etc., with ease and guide your readers through your work seamlessly.
  • Credibility: An easy-to-use, genre-specific website makes you look put together and builds your credibility and authority.
  • Visibility: Readers can find your website when they Google you or keywords related to your books.
  • Reader engagement: Your website is an opportunity to keep potential new readers and fans engaged with updates, resources, and a newsletter
  • Book sales: You can direct readers to your most popular book with well-placed reviews and extras like behind-the-scenes content and writer journey updates.
  • Direct sales: If you choose, you can even sell books right from your site’s shop.

What Goes Into an Author Website (Essentials vs Premium)

The cost of your author website depends on what you want in terms of features. Here’s a breakdown of the essentials and premium additions for budget-curious authors:

Must-haves

These are your basics and should be the core of any professional author website:

  • Home page: Use this to make an impactful introduction with intriguing information that leads to other pages on your site, curating a good user journey.
  • About page: Share your journey as a writer and person to highlight your brand for the reader to get to know the person behind the work.
  • Books page: Layout your books and series in a way that’s easy to navigate and enticing for readers.
  • Contact page: Make it easy for readers (and possible collaborators and promoters) to send in messages, and you’ll appreciate the engagement! This section also helps non-fiction authors and speakers get personal with their audience since they have services.
  • Email sign-up page: You’re wasting your website traffic’s potential if you’re not funneling them to your email list. Offer a lead magnet and you’ll have an audience to nurture for a long time.

Nice-to-haves

Although these premium features add onto costs, they really round out your website and give readers a reason to return to your site:

  • Blog: Find topics that interest your target audience and write high-quality content either weekly or monthly to engage them.
  • Events: List dates or have a calendar of your upcoming events to expand your reach and ensure readers know where to find you next.
  • Extra resources: Articles of interest, videos, maps, character descriptions, glossaries, etc., can be a great way to entertain fans and encourage new readers to engage with your universe.
  • Shop: This requires an e-commerce page where you sell books and merch directly to your readers. You’ll have more control over your sales while keeping more of the profits since you’re cutting out the middleman.
  • Landing pages: Use these for giveaways, requesting beta readers, service pages, etc., to increase your traffic and capture data from readers for marketing.

Author Website Cost Factors

If you want to build a website on your own, you’ll need to consider these:

Domain

A domain is your website address. It will look something like yourname.com or yournameauthor.com. Having it as close to your author name as possible helps it show up when readers type your name into Google.

To get a domain, you’d need to pay a yearly fee, which is a first year purchase then a renewal thereafter. They cost about $10-$20 a year on average. To make things easy, we recommend buying your domain from the same provider as your website host.

Note: If you already have a website and are looking to upgrade, you may have to transfer your domain, which will also factor into costs.

Hosting

Hosting gives you space to have your website’s data and files on the internet. With some website providers, the price of hosting is included in their subscription, but if you decide to build the website yourself, hosting is a separate cost.

If you’re building a WordPress site, you can get hosting for about $13.17 per month. You can also use:

  • GoDaddy ranges from $5.99 – $29.99 per month
  • Siteground ranges from $14,99 – $49.99 per month.
  • WP Engine ranges from $25 – $242 per month (or more under the custom option).

With hosting, you’re paying for the ability to serve your site faster and to more readers. We recommend lower pricing unless you expect your site to get a lot of traffic.

Maintenance

Once you’ve built the website, the costs don’t stop there. For example, when using WordPress as a site builder, you’ll need to check frequently to update plugins.

What are plugins?

They are the additions you make to your website for added functionality. Most premium plugins can be purchased for a one-time fee, and website designers usually include this in their pricing (we do).

However, some premium plugins like learning management systems may have a yearly renewal fee.

Keep in mind that too many plugins can slow down your site.

If there are any updates for your plugins, they won’t automatically be added to your site. You need to manage that on your own or go to the professional who built it to maintain the website, which may cost more money depending on their pricing plans.

Design

The assets from your book covers can be added to your website with some website design knowledge, but if you want a new logo and any other elements that still reflect your genre, you’ll need to pay a professional.

This is a cost you can forgo if you’re on a budget.

Pro tip: Your logo should be bold and clean. Most people use their mobiles to browse online, so ensure your logo is easy to see in a small size on the top left of your website. Avoid making your logo too fancy or tiny that it can’t be read on mobile.

Time

This cost is sneaky because you don’t notice it until it’s gone.

Things like maintenance or removing malware (knock on wood that doesn’t happen) will be time-consuming, not to mention quite stressful.

Prepare to “pay” in time and stress if you build the website yourself.

Answering Your Website Cost FAQs

We’re going to answer your most burning questions to help you make a well-informed decision.

How Much Does An Author Website Cost?

An author website cost can range from $500 to $15000, and it depends on whether you hire a professional or build it yourself, as well as the type of features you want.

When hiring a professional, we’d recommend looking at the $2000 – $10 000 range as they’d likely put more effort into building it to your expectations. The higher the price, the more features and design go into it. Keep an eye out for any unclear costing when doing research.

The website design industry can feel like the wild west, given the rapid evolution of the internet and constantly changing website platforms. You can pay almost nothing for a site, and you’ll get something worth almost nothing. You can also pay a high fee and get something that’s overkill for what you actually need.

But in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Choose a lower price option, and you’ll probably get a freelancer who may not have all the skills to produce what you need.

But with a higher price option, you can get a team of professionals all working with specialized skillsets to make your website even more amazing (like we do!).

Can I Create an Author Website for Free?

Yes, you can. But should you?

Carrd, Canva, and WordPress.com allow you to build a website for free and spend very little time doing it.

But the resulting website may just show how little time and money you spent on it. That’s the last thing you want a reader to think of when they visit your website.

For the full picture, these are the pros and cons of building a website for free:

Pros:

  • Simple website: You can create a simple one-page website with the basics and call it a day. Less time spent, low stress.
  • Templates: Some website providers may have some appealing templates that you can take advantage of instead of scratching your head on how a site should look.
  • Drag-and-drop: Services like Wix, WordPress, or Weebly have drag-and-drop functionalities that can make novice website designers look like they know what they’re doing.
  • Zero costs: This saves you a pretty penny, which you can use on marketing efforts.

Cons:

  • Upgrade for features: You have to pay for an upgrade if you want a custom domain, e-commerce, more storage space, or more functionality to improve the user experience.
  • Their branding: Free sites like Wix will have their branding on your site, which takes away from your image and makes you look rather cheap.
  • Ads: Free websites from Wix and WordPress have ads, which makes your website look spammy and unprofessional.
  • No Customization: Templates can be nice, but they offer very few options for customization, leading to a very generic site that isn’t half as good as you’d hoped.
  • Bad SEO: Some free services don’t offer enough SEO (search engine optimization) capabilities, making your efforts for Google visibility useless.
  • Time Spent: You’ll have to spend a lot of your own time learning how to do it and building it. This is the time you could spend on what you do best, writing your next book!

Can I publish my own author website?

Yes, you absolutely can! But bear in mind that this isn’t something you can get done in one afternoon. You have to consider the pages you want: domain, hosting, maintenance, as well as design elements.

Squarespace, Wix, and WordPress are great website builders that allow you to either build from scratch or use templates. But there are different plans under each, which determine the type of features you get.

Make sure to do your research, as some of these plans charge you more for hosting and domains than what it would cost if you paid for that on your own.

Your decision to DIY or hire someone hinges on 2 important factors: time and money.

You can either spend more time and less money and build it yourself, or spend more on a premium website built by professionals, and spend your time working on your books and marketing.

Can I pay someone to make a website for me?

Yes, you can pay someone between $500 and $15000 to build your author website. It depends on the website designer, their capabilities, and where you find them.

For example, if you find a professional from Upwork, Fiverr, or 99designs willing to build it for around $500, you risk:

  • Receiving a low-functionality site with stability issues.
  • Your site being slow and unoptimized.
  • Having a generic design that resembles one of their other clients.
  • Getting a website that doesn’t match your brand and genre.
  • Paying hidden costs not disclosed in the original amount.

If someone is only taking $500 for your website, how much time and effort can they possibly dedicate to your project and still make a decent living?

Whereas, if you do your research and vet custom website designers, like us, you can get a website that:

  • Has the functions and features you need, while being stable.
  • Loads quickly and is user-friendly on all devices, including mobile.
  • Is custom-built and original, allowing you to stand out.
  • Suits your brand and books to a T, and captures your audience’s attention.
  • Doesn’t hide costs and shows you exactly what you’ll get at every step.

How much should I pay someone to create a website?

If you want a custom-built, professional website that’s optimized for your readers, you should pay between $3000 – $7000.

We suggest taking a monthly payment plan to split the amount to ensure you’re not breaking the bank on your investment. This is a stressful step to take, therefore we offer monthly payments for our author clients.

We can’t speak for others, so we decided to give you a better look at how much you should realistically pay someone to create your website:

This website build is stylish, optimized, and focuses on your main goals of selling books, building your brand, and growing your reader base. Most of our websites fall into this category.

With our standard custom build, you’ll get:

This pricing option is made for those authors, speakers, and coaches who need something extra to get their message across. If you have more content to handle and need more features and functionality, you’ll pay around $4500-$7000.

For example, you’ll pay off $2,150 in 3 monthly payments for a $6,450 custom website.

For this option, you’ll get everything listed in the standard build plus these features below:

  • Premium scroll or mouse hover animations.

We have a portfolio of our work if you want to see what we’re capable of.

You can find a one-man team freelancer to build your site, or go with us and rest easy knowing we have a dedicated team of experts on every website project.

Your project will include: a project consultant, a project manager, a graphic designer, a website designer, and an operations manager.

We ensure expert support at every step.

What Should You Do Next?

You can start the research and see how you can either build it yourself or who you can hire to build it for you (cough, cough, we’re available).

But actually, the first step we’d suggest you take is truly figuring out what you want from your website.

It’s an investment in your career, so you should be absolutely certain what impact you want it to make. Be certain of the goals you want for yourself and how your website can help you achieve them.

Only then can you ascertain the right path for yourself: DIY or hire a professional.

Then, what should you do after that?
